Cast on 36 stitches (using crochet cast on if you would like it to match the bind off edge).
Knit 6 rows garter stitch.

Row 1 [RS]: [K4, sl2 wyif] ×5, k8.
Row 2 [WS]: K4, p3, [sl2 wyib, p4] ×4, sl2 wyib, p1, k4.
Row 3: K6, [sl2 wyif, k4] ×4, sl2 wyif, k6.
Row 4: K4, p1, [sl2 wyib, p4] ×4, sl2 wyib, p3, k4.
Row 5: K8, [sl2 wyif, k4] ×5.
Row 6: K4, sl1 wyib, [p4, sl2 wyib] ×4, p4, sl1 wyib, k4.
Rep rows 1-6 for desired length, ending on a row 4
Knit 6 rows garter stitch.
